The Bag-Price Trap: Why the Cheapest De-Icer Can Cost More by Morning

Cheap Material Can Become Expensive Service

A bag of de-icer has a visible price. Its real winter cost is harder to see.

For strata councils comparing Richmond ice and snow service, the cheapest product on an invoice may look like the obvious choice. But material economics change once application rate, repeat visits, labour, surface conditions, cleanup, and potential property impacts are included.

That is why a useful deicer cost comparison should not begin with “Which bag costs less?” It should begin with “What does it cost to achieve the required result on this particular surface?”

Traditional rock salt remains widely used because it is affordable, available, familiar to crews, and effective in many ordinary winter conditions. But a property may spend more overall if a lower-priced product has to be applied heavily, reapplied after conditions change, or used where another material would perform more efficiently.
